When preparing for a photo session, it already can be overwhelming to simply get yourself ready and find the right clothes for the session, to even think about what you need to bring is extra stress icing on the cake. BUT, it doesn’t have to be!
I have compiled all the moving parts to consider when getting items and props together to make your photography session authentic, relatable, and full of life and movement. The days of sitting still and posing like a President in front of a fake bookcase are over.
Finding a fun and engaging place that aligns with your brand makes it so much easier to move about without putting tons of effort into your own. Always make sure the locations you choose to allow you to photograph there. Certain locations will charge a fee when photographing and creating content. However, I love a good freebie like the rest of us! CLICK HERE to view some of my favorite shoot locations in Texas, many of them being free! One of my favorite local places to shoot is Heirloom Haul because they have a delicious tea service that is another fabulous prop option plus an adorable backdrop.
Hotels are another great option to create content. Not only do they have TONS of props (coffee table books, candles, coffee mugs, etc.), but they usually have several different rooms with different aesthetics and backgrounds to offer.
Different home decor pieces such as throw pillows, vases, and candles are staple props to include in your session. Not only does it give you something to do with your hands, but you’re also able to showcase different aspects of your brand. These pieces set the scene and give your content life.

Flowers are my absolute favorite prop! They’re an extra touch of intention and freshness. I, personally, love to have fresh flowers in my home every week. When I was younger, I wasn’t as appreciative of flowers and the sweet details they showcase in a space or your personality. But, it’s hard to find my office space, home, or any photography session without beautiful flowers as my prop.

Another reason I love utilizing flowers as a prop is that it gives your content fluidity and life that can be difficult to capture without flowers. You’re able to set the scene and your space with flowers to capture content that shows the life of your brand.
As a professional photographer by trade, I have coached many people through looking natural and comfortable in their imagery. One of my favorite questions I would have clients ask is “What do I do with my hands?!” I have an answer for you! FLOWERS! Props are designed to show your personality and that includes making you COMFORTABLE enough in front of the camera for that natural personality to shine through. After all, the content is about YOU and however you can show your best self is always what I will advocate for.
A simple way to elevate your props is by incorporating food and sweet treats! Not only does it help make your content relatable and appealing, but also gives several different types of shots which helps generate more content you can use in your marketing approach.
Plus, after a long shoot wraps, they are a super rewarding treat!
Props are all about highlighting the details: what are the fine details that make your brand YOURS. What items will help establish your credibility? Highlight your personality? Showcase your brand and the products or services you offer?
Whether you choose to incorporate flowers, home decor pieces, treats, or accessories, your content should speak to YOUR BRAND.

Bracelet | Earrings | Cuff | Romper | Headband | Flowers | Heels
I strongly encourage clients to wear clothing they feel confident in because it shows through in their content. Which is why I love to wear clothing that is authentic, reflects me and what my message is. Anyone who knows me knows I can often be seen wearing some sort of headband, I’ve been especially loving this pearl hand band lately!
Volcano Candle | Flowers | Stem Organizer | Vase | Vogue Book | Chanel Book | Tom Ford Book | Plants
As always, your props should be authentic to your brand and your message. I love to use simple and timeless props so I’m able to produce more evergreen content. I love incorporating coffee table books like the Vogue Book, Chanel Book, and the Tom Ford Book into my flatlays. I also recently discovered this incredibly handy Stem Organizer that is used to achieve the perfect florist-approved arrangement by helping map out the arrangement of your flowers.
