As of June 15, 2023, Instagram has expanded its broadcasting channels feature to the US. A broadcast channel allows you to send one-way messages to channel members who are either your Instagram followers or paid subscribers. Your channel can give your followers access to exclusive or behind-the-scenes content, this is a great way to increase engagement. This feature can only be accessed on the Instagram app.
If your Instagram account is in creator mode you can start a broadcast channel from your Instagram inbox. Once you send your first message in the channel, your followers will receive a one-time notification to join your channel.
Text, photos, videos, voice notes, and polls can communicate and relate your messages to your followers who have subscribed to your channel. This content goes straight into their direct messages where they can react to the content and participate in polls.
You can choose to start a broadcast channel for subscribers only, paid subscribers if you’d like or open it to the public by choosing the “all followers” option.
Once your channel is live you have access to a “join channel” sticker that can be used in your Instagram Stories or it can also be pinned to your profile to encourage your followers to subscribe. Anyone can discover the broadcast channel and view the content; however only your followers who have joined the channel will get notifications on new updates or content dropped into the channel. Followers have the option to leave or mute the broadcast channels at any time, or even turn off notifications entirely.
This new Instagram update gives creators a new way of getting passed the Instagram algorithm by reaching and engaging with their audience in a more personable and intimate way. Some of the benefits of starting an Instagram broadcasting channel includes:

Since Instagram broadcast channels are extremley new, a lot of your followers will have no idea what they are. Maker sure to share your join link on your Instagram stories as well as attach it to your profile for easy access. Generate excitement and anticipation with a giveaway to encourage your followers to join. You can also hop on your stories and talk about what what your followers can expect to get from your channel and show them how to join.
Plan Ahead
Having a strategy of what you want out of your channel is KEY to making it a success. Plan your content in advance, creating a content calendar for your Instagram broadcast channel will make it easier to keep up with and will allow you to target your goals. Make sure your first message counts! Your first message sends a notification to your followers (who have their notifications on) and is the first thing they see when considering joining your broadcast channel. Try answering the question: Why should your followers/subscribers be here?
Engagement
Once you’ve created a channel and have come up with a content strategy you now have to focus on engaging with your channel audience. Planning your content will make it easier for you to achieve this. Encourage your audience to comment and to help create a sense of community to help foster a personal connection with them.
There are so many different ways you can help engage your audience, depending on what your goal for your channel is. You can provide a behind-the-scene look or insight and tips, valuable information that will keep them coming back. Polls, photos,videos, and voice notes can get up to 2-6x more engagement from followers/subscribers alongside longer form text.
